In a cross-validation study performed in a maximum security prison, prisoners who learned the Transcendental Meditation program showed reductions in anxiety, neuroticism, hostility, and insomnia, and committed fewer behavioral infractions than controls.

The benefits of Transcendental Meditation reported in the previous paper were found not to be the result of selection bias or a tendency of subjects to make socially desirable, untrue responses.

- 1981· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 4Baer, N.; Nidich, S.; and Abrams, A. A comparative study of Maharishi International University and two small private colleges on perceived personal growth, perceived academic atmosphere, and general quality of life. Master’s thesis, Department of Education, Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, 1981.
Students at Maharishi International University perceived their personal growth to be greater, and the quality of the academic atmosphere in the university to be higher, than did students from two other institutions of higher learning. These results are attributed to the unique, unified field approach to education utilized at MIU, which includes the regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program as part of the curriculum.

- Academic Performance: Greater Desire for Higher Academic Degrees
- Academic Performance: Better Academic Atmosphere

Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA. Paper presented in part at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Conference, Louisville, Kentucky, USA, 26 March 1982.
This paper reviews research demonstrating that the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program produces consistent beneficial effects for both criminal rehabilitation and crime prevention.

- 1983· Journal of Moral Education· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Nidich, S. I.; Ryncarz, R. A.; Abrams, A. I.; Orme-Johnson, D. W.; and Wallace, R. K. Kohlbergian cosmic perspective responses, EEG coherence, and the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program. Journal of Moral Education 12(3): 166–173, 1983.
High frontal alpha EEG coherence was associated with a more unified perspective of life, as described by Kohlberg's Stage 7, in subjects practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program.

A six-year study of a large sample of prison inmates who were instructed in the Transcendental Meditation program showed markedly lower recidivism after release.
- Rehabilitation of Offenders: Reduced Recidivism
- 1987· International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice· Research Review· Collected Papers Vol. 5Dillbeck, M. C.; and Abrams, A. I. The application of the Transcendental Meditation program to corrections. International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice 11: 111–132, 1987.
This paper reviews the research results on the application of the Transcendental Meditation program in corrections, including improved mental health and reduced hostility among inmates, and reduced recidivism upon release. The authors propose the implementation of the Transcendental Meditation program in correctional settings on a large scale, in order to promote effective rehabilitation and thereby reduce the substantial financial and human costs of incarceration to society.

- 1989· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Nidich, S. I.; Abrams, A.; Jones, C.; Orme-Johnson, D. W.; and Wallace, R. K. Neurophysiological entry characteristics: Correlation between EEG coherence and math achievement with subjects practicing the TM Program. Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, 1981.
EEG coherence was found to be positively correlated with mathematics grades in students practicing Transcendental Meditation. EEG coherence has previously been found to increase as a result of Transcendental Meditation and to correlate with clarity of experience of unbounded awareness. Taken together, these findings emphasize the intimate relationship between higher states of consciousness, neurophysiological integration, and intellectual performance.

- 1989· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Abrams, A. I. A follow-up study of the effects of the Transcendental Meditation Program on inmates at Folsom Prison. Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, 1982.
Sustained reductions in anxiety, hostility, neuroticism, insomnia, and use of cigarettes were found in a group of prisoners following nine months' practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique.

- 1989· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 4Nidich, S. I.; Nidich, R.; Abrams, A.; Orme-Johnson, D.; and Wallace, R. K. Frontal lobe functioning: EEG coherence as a predictor of highly pro-social behavior in subjects practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program. Departments of Education, Psychology, and Biology, Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, 1982.
Higher levels of bilateral frontal EEG coherence were found to be predictive of highly pro-social behavior in students practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program. This study, taken together with earlier research showing a close relationship between high levels of frontal EEG coherence and the experience of pure consciousness during the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program, indicates that this experience is a key factor in promoting more ideal social behavior.

- 1989· Journal of Clinical Psychology· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 4Eppley, K.; Abrams, A.; and Shear, J. The effects of meditation and relaxation techniques on trait anxiety: A meta-analysis. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California, USA; Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA; and Institute for Philosophy, Consciousness, and S.C.I., Richmond, Virginia, USA. Summary of paper presented at the meeting of the American Psychological Association, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 1984, and subsequently published as Eppley, K.; Abrams, A.; and Shear, J. Differential effects of relaxation techniqueson trait anxiety: A meta-analysis. Journal of Clinical Psychology 45: 957–974, 1989.
A meta-analysis of studies on methods used to reduce trait anxiety showed Transcendental Meditation to be more effective than other techniques of meditation or relaxation.
