Stress reduction in the prevention of left ventricular hypertrophy: A randomized controlled trial of Transcendental Meditation and health education in hypertensive African Americans

Schneider, Robert H.; Myers, Hector F.; Marwaha, Komal; Rainforth, Maxwell A.; Salerno, John W.; Nidich, Sanford I.; Gaylord-King, Carolyn; Alexander, Charles N.; Norris, Keith C. (2019). Stress reduction in the prevention of left ventricular hypertrophy: A randomized controlled trial of Transcendental Meditation and health education in hypertensive African Americans. Ethnicity & Disease, 29(4), 577–586.

Also: Reanalysis of a trial conducted in 1994–1999; not newly recruited in 2019.

Reanalysis of an earlier randomized trial in hypertensive African American adults. At six months, 85 completers showed less progression in left ventricular mass index with TM than health education; substantial attrition limits interpretation.

Findings (3)

Health—Cardiovascular

  • TM had less progression in left ventricular mass index than health education (adjusted difference −7.55 g/m², p=.040).

Transcendental Meditation · Randomized controlled trial

Cardiovascular

  • Blood pressure fell within both groups without a significant between-group difference.

Transcendental Meditation · Randomized controlled trial

Psychological Health

  • Anger declined within both groups; these results do not establish a TM-specific advantage.
