Practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation technique showed less distress associated with the experience of acute experimental pain than non-meditating control subjects. This finding is discussed in relation to the growth of higher states of consciousness.

- 1982· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Wallace, R. K.; Mills, P. J.; Orme-Johnson, D. W.; Dillbeck, M. C.; and Jacobe, E. The paired H reflex and its correlation with EEG coherence and academic performance in normal subjects practicing meditation. Society for Neuroscience Abstracts 8: 537, 1982.
Paired H-reflex recovery was found to be correlated with EEG coherence and academic performance in participants in the Transcendental Meditation program.

The amplitude of the paired H reflex was facilitated as a result of the TM-Sidhi program, indicating improved neurological efficiency.

- 1983· Psychosomatic Medicine· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Wallace, R. K.; Silver, J.; Mills, P. J.; Dillbeck, M. C.; and Wagoner, D. E. Systolic blood pressure and long-term practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program: Effects of TM on systolic blood pressure. Psychosomatic Medicine 45(1): 41–46, 1983.
Subjects practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program were found to have lower systolic blood pressure than norms for the general population. Furthermore, long-term meditators were seen to have lower systolic blood pressure than short-term meditators.

Refer also to findings published in Psychosomatic Medicine 49: 211, 1987 and Journal of Psychosomatic Research 33(6), 1989.
At rest and in response to stress tests, Transcendental Meditation participants maintained lower levels of blood pressure and other physiological indices of stress.

Luteinizing hormone: A marker for Type A behavior and its modification by the Transcendental Meditation Program. Psychosomatic Medicine 49: 212–213, 1987. Findings also published in Neuroendocrinology Letters 9: 181, 1987.
The Type A behavior pattern is considered by some to be a risk factor for heart disease. However, Type A subjects who practiced the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program showed more normal hormone levels and reactivity to stress.

Subjects practicing the TM-Sidhi program demonstrated faster recovery of the paired H reflex than a control group practicing only Transcendental Meditation.

- 1989· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Wallace, R. K.; Orme-Johnson, D. W.; Mills, P. J.; Dillbeck, M. C.; and Jacobe, E. The relationship between the paired Hoffman reflex and academic achievement in participants of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Program. Departments of Biology and Psychology, Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, 1980.
The paired H reflex was found to be correlated with academic achievement in subjects practicing Transcendental Meditation. Previous studies have shown that clear experiences during the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program are correlated with faster H-reflex recovery, as well as with higher EEG coherence, greater creativity, and more flexible performance on concept learning. Taken together, these findings emphasize the intimate relationship between the experience of higher states of consciousness and improvements in physiological and psychological functioning.
