Banquet, J. P.; and Sailhan, M. EEG analysis of spontaneous and induced states of consciousness. Revue d’électroencéphalographie et de neurophysiologie clinique 4: 445–453, 1974.
The state produced during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique was found to differ from sleep, relaxation, and arousal in that the technique produces greater wakefulness (high proportion of alpha to delta) and less activation (low proportion of beta to alpha), indicating that this state is a unique state of least excitation of consciousness.
