The state produced during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique was found to differ from sleep, relaxation, and arousal in that the technique produces greater wakefulness (high proportion of alpha to delta) and less activation (low proportion of beta to alpha), indicating that this state is a unique state of least excitation of consciousness.
- During the Practice—Brain Activity: Greater Wakefulness (Increased Proportion of Alpha to Delta EEG)
- During the Practice—Brain Activity: Less Activation (Decreased Proportion of Beta to Alpha EEG)
- During the Practice—Brain Activity: Greater Interhemispheric and Intrahemispheric EEG Synchronization

Stanley Cobb Laboratories for Psychiatric Research, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and Institut de la Rochefoucauld, Paris, France. Paper presented at the Second European Congress on Sleep Research, Rome, Italy, 10 April 1974.
Long-term participants in the Transcendental Meditation program showed awareness during different periods of sleep, including phases of deep sleep and paradoxical sleep.
