Banquet, J. P.; Haynes, C.; Hebert, R.; and Reber, B. Analysis of sleep in altered states of consciousness by classical EEG and coherence spectra. Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology 43(4): 503 (abstract), 1977.
The phrase `altered states of consciousness' in the title of this paper refers to higher states of consciousness developed through the Transcendental Meditation program. Subjects practicing Transcendental Meditation were found to require less sleep during the night than controls. In addition, the number of sleep stages was fewer and their duration shorter, except for stage 1, which was longer. EEG coherence showed a progressive decrease during sleep, while high levels of coherence were seen during the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
