- 1977· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 1Hebert, J. R. Periodic suspension of respiration during the Transcendental Meditation technique. Psychophysiology Laboratory, Centre for the Study of Higher States of Consciousness, Maharishi European Research University, Switzerland, 1976.
Recurrent suspension of breath occurred in subjects during the Transcendental Meditation technique for periods of from ten to 45 seconds.

- 1977· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 1Levine, P. H.; Hebert, J. R.; Haynes, C. T.; and Strobel, U. EEG coherence during the Transcendental Meditation technique. Psychophysiology Laboratory, Centre for the Study of Higher States of Consciousness, Maharishi European Research University, Switzerland, 1975.
Increases in EEG coherence specific to the Transcendental Meditation technique, especially in the alpha and theta bands, indicate increased ordering of brain wave activity during practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique.
- During the Practice—Brain Activity: Increased EEG Coherence, Especially in Alpha and Theta Bands
- 1977· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 1Haynes, C. T.; Hebert, J. R.; Reber, W.; and Orme-Johnson, D. W. The psychophysiology of advanced participants in the Transcendental Meditation Program: Correlations of EEG coherence, creativity, H-reflex recovery, and experience of transcendental consciousness. Psychophysiology Laboratory, Centre for the Study of Higher States of Consciousness, Maharishi European Research University, Switzerland, 1976.
High EEG coherence, high creativity, rapid neuromuscular recovery, and experience of transcendental consciousness are all correlated in individuals participating in an advanced Transcendental Meditation program.

International Center for Scientific Research, Maharishi International University, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, 1973.
People practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique had faster reactions after a period of the technique than after a period of rest.

- 1977· Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 2Banquet, J. P.; Haynes, C.; Hebert, R.; and Reber, B. Analysis of sleep in altered states of consciousness by classical EEG and coherence spectra. Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology 43(4): 503 (abstract), 1977.
The phrase `altered states of consciousness' in the title of this paper refers to higher states of consciousness developed through the Transcendental Meditation program. Subjects practicing Transcendental Meditation were found to require less sleep during the night than controls. In addition, the number of sleep stages was fewer and their duration shorter, except for stage 1, which was longer. EEG coherence showed a progressive decrease during sleep, while high levels of coherence were seen during the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

- 1977· Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 2Hebert, R.; and Lehmann, D. Theta bursts: An EEG pattern in normal subjects practising the Transcendental Meditation technique. Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology 42: 397–405, 1977.
Frontally dominant theta bursts were found in subjects practicing Transcendental Meditation. These were seen to be different from theta activity in sleep or pathological states, and may be associated with the experience of satisfaction.
- During the Practice—Brain Activity: High Amplitude Synchronous Theta Bursts
- 1982· Psychosomatic Medicine· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 3Farrow, J. T.; and Hebert, J. R. Breath suspension during the Transcendental Meditation technique. Psychosomatic Medicine 44(2): 133–153, 1982.
Periods of breath suspension were found to be a frequent occurrence during Transcendental Meditation. These periods, together with low metabolic rate, reduced heart rate, increased autonomic stability and increased EEG coherence were found to be associated with the experience of pure consciousness during Transcendental Meditation.
