Changes in Trait Brainwave Power and Coherence, State and Trait Anxiety After Three-Month Transcendental Meditation (TM) Practice

Tomljenović, Helena; Begić, Dražen; Maštrović, Zora (2016). Changes in Trait Brainwave Power and Coherence, State and Trait Anxiety After Three-Month Transcendental Meditation (TM) Practice. Psychiatria Danubina, 28(1), 63–72.

Small uncontrolled study of 12 volunteers examining resting EEG before and after three months of TM practice. Anxiety was assessed after two weeks of practice and again at three months. Nine participants were new to meditation and three already had some experience. The study reports reductions in state anxiety and changes in selected EEG measures, with many EEG results reaching only a trend-level threshold.

Findings (3)

Psychological Health

  • State anxiety and cognitive worry decreased between the two-week and three-month assessments (p < .05); trait anxiety did not significantly change.

Electroencephalographic

  • Resting alpha power decreased at the left occipital O1 electrode (p < .05); other reported alpha and beta changes were trend-level.

Transcendental Meditation · Longitudinal within group

  • Left-hemisphere theta power and theta coherence showed changes reported mainly at p < .10; these should not be described as conventionally significant effects.
