Banquet, J. P.; and Lesèvre, N. Event-related potentials in altered states of consciousness. Motivation, Motor and Sensory Processes of the Brain, Progress in Brain Research 54: 447–453, 1980.
In this paper the phrase `altered states of consciousness' refers to higher states of consciousness developed through the Transcendental Meditation program. Practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation program were found to have faster reactions with fewer mistakes, and a shorter latency and larger amplitude of visual evoked potentials, indicating an increase in the capacity for selective attention and an improved level of vigilance.
