Transcendental Consciousness: A fourth state of consciousness beyond sleep, dreaming, and waking. Abridged version of a chapter which appeared in Sleep and Dreams: A Sourcebook, ed. J. Gackenbach, pp. 282–315. New York: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1987.
Physiological research is reviewed indicating that transcendental consciousness is a unique fourth major state of consciousness.

- 1989· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 5Orme-Johnson, D. W.; Dillbeck, M. C.; Alexander, C.; Chandler, H. M.; and Cranson, R. W. Time series impact assessment analysis of reduced international conflict and terrorism: Effects of large assemblies of participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program. Summary of a paper presented at the Annual Conference of the American Political Science Association, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, August 1989.
Time series analyses indicated that during the three largest assemblies of participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program there were significant reductions in international conflict and terrorism, and improved economic conditions worldwide.
- Sociological—Reduced Violent Conflict: Reduced Conflict Globally (Worldwide, 1983–1985)
- Sociological—Reduced Violent Conflict: Reduced Terrorism (Worldwide, 1983–1985)
- Sociological—Improved Economy: Increase in World Index of Stock Prices (Worldwide, 1983–1985)
- 1990· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 5Cranson, R. Increased general intelligence through the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program. Abstract of a paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Psychological Association, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, August 1989.
Students at a college implementing Maharishi's Unified Field Based System of Education improved on measures of intelligence and reaction time over a two-year period.
- Cognitive Performance: Increased General Intelligence among University Students
- Motor Performance: Improvement in Reaction-Time Measures (that are Correlated with Intelligence) among University Students
- 1990· Psychophysiology· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 6Cranson, R.; Goddard, P.; Orme-Johnson, D.; and Schuster, D. P300 under conditions of temporal uncertainty and filter attenuation: Reduced latency in long-term practitioners of TM. Psychophysiology 27 (Suppl. 4A): S23 (Abstract), 1990.
Long-term practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation program were found to display faster neurocognitive processing, as measured by reduced latency of P300 brain response to auditory stimuli.
- Electroencephalographic: Reduced Latency of Auditory Brain Response (P300)
- 1991· Personality and Individual Differences· Empirical· Collected Papers Vol. 6Cranson, R. W.; Orme-Johnson, D.W.; Gackenbach, J.; Dillbeck, M. C.; Jones, C. H.; and Alexander, C. N. Transcendental Meditation and improved performance on intelligence-related measures: A longitudinal study. Personality and Individual Differences 12: 1105–1116, 1991.
This study found that university students practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program demonstrated, in comparison to control students, improved performance on a psychometric intelligence test, improvement in reaction time measures correlated with general intelligence (faster choice reaction time, lower standard deviation of choice reaction time), and faster simple reaction time.—
- Motor Performance: Faster Simple Reaction Time
- Cognitive Performance: Improved Intelligence Test Performance
- Motor Performance: Improvement in Reaction Time Measures Correlated with General Intelligence (Faster Choice Reaction Time, Lower Standard Deviation of Choice Reaction Time)
