Consciousness as a field: The Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program and changes in social indicators. The Journal of Mind and Behavior 8: 67–104, 1987.
Five time series studies conducted in different parts of the world consistently showed measurable improvements in society during periods in which the square root of one percent of the population was participating in the group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program. This is known as the Maharishi Effect.

Time series analysis of an index of inflation and unemployment showed that following periods of high participation in the group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program by a single large group in North America, economic conditions improved in both the U.S. and Canada.

Time series analysis of an economic "misery index" of U.S. inflation and unemployment rates demonstrated reduction in this index following periods of high numbers of participants in the group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program at Maharishi International University, controlling for changes in key U.S. economic variables.

The collective practice of the Maharishi Technology of the Unified Field by 7,000 experts-the square root of one percent of the world's population-assembled at Maharishi International University, U.S.A. was found to create coherence in the entire world consciousness, as reflected by a substantial increase in the World index, an international index of stock prices in 19 countries.

The collective practice of the Maharishi Technology of the Unified Field by one group of 7,000 experts-the square root of one percent of the world's population-assembled at Maharishi International University, U.S.A., was found to create coherence in the entire world consciousness, leading to an improved quality of life throughout the world. This was reflected in increased progress by heads of state in reversing negative trends and accelerating positive trends; increased harmony in international affairs; increased worldwide economic prosperity, as expressed in the simultaneous rise of stock markets in many different countries; decreased traffic fatalities; decreased air traffic fatalities; increased creativity, as measured by increased numbers of patent applications; decreased incidence of infectious diseases; and decreased crime.

Periods with large numbers in the group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program led to a marked reduction in an index of inflation and unemployment in the U.S., controlling for the effect of business cycle fluctuations as well as short- and long-term effects of other major economic variables.

This time series study of an independent data bank found that when the size of a group of participants in the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi program in the United States was larger than the square root of one per cent of the U.S. population (a little over 1500 at the time—from 1979 to 1986), there was a significant increase in the positivity of actions of the United States towards the Soviet Union compared to periods when the size of the group was below 1500. When the group of participants in the TM-Sidhi program was larger than 1700, creating the strongest influence of the Maharishi Effect in the United States, there was also an independent significant increase of positivity of actions of the Soviet Union towards the United States.

This paper reviews a series of studies that document improvements in the national economies of the U.S. and Canada, as indicated by an index of decreased inflation and decreased unemployment, when the number of participants in Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program exceeded the square root of one per cent of their national populations.

This study, using time series transfer function analysis of an independent data source on U.S.-Soviet relations from 1979 to 1986, found that during and immediately after the months in which were held assemblies of TM-Sidhi program participants large enough to predict an international influence, there was a statistically significant and substantial increase in the peaceful quality of actions of the Soviet Union toward the United States, controlling for the preceding behavior of the United States toward the Soviet Union. Supplementary analyses indicated that this effect was independent of any outlying data points, independent of seasonal behavior of the Soviet Union toward the United States, and independent of changes associated with the Gorbachev administration.

This study found decreased crime rate in Merseyside, England, from 1988 to 1991, after the establishment of a permanent group of participants in the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi program, including Yogic Flying, which exceeded in size the square root of one per cent of the population of the metropolitan area.

During the period of a large assembly of experts in the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi program, including Yogic Flying, in Washington, D.C. in June and July of 1993, there was a significant decrease in violent crime (homicides, rapes, assaults) as indicated by time series analysis, with results independent of temperature and police staffing.

This study found that during a two-month period in which an increasingly large group of participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program assembled in Washington, DC, there was a significant decrease in violent crime in the District of Columbia; violent crime decreased as the size of the group increased.
